You are already inspired by many things … the intricate and detailed work of an accomplished painter, the cut of a gemstone in a finely crafted piece of jewelry, color and design in nature. As you look at that beautiful painting or that amazing sunset I want you to analyze it. Why do you like it? What quality grabs your attention? What do you love about it, is the texture smooth or rough, are the lines geometric or organic? Take your time, think about it thoroughly.
Now write down your thoughts, put them in a journal. Your journal will be your key to unlocking the door to your creative life. I don’t mean the kind of journal where you record the events of the day. This journal will record your hopes, dreams, and desires, what you want to accomplish creatively. It might contain notations of the colors you love or the style you like. Do rustic and neutral tones draw your attention or do delicate pinks catch your fancy? Do the hard geometric lines of contemporary sculpture make you stop and look or is it the soft, out of focus aesthetic of impressionist paintings?
Make a private Pinterest board of things you love. Gather a collection of artist’s websites you admire. Head over to Instagram and search for your favorite hashtag.
This is not the time to face your fears. It’s the time to allow yourself to dream. If you could do anything, what would it be? Write it down!
“Turning our attention away from the external world and turning in – to the world within – dreams, fantasies, stories, personal narratives, and feelings – not only builds a sense of meaning and hope … but also allows us to tap into our deepest wellsprings of creativity.”
~Scott Barry Kaufman & Carolyn Gregoire
